Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as an eyelid lift, is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and fat deposits around the eyes to give patients a more youthful and alert look. Sagging eyelid skin can not only contribute to an aged appearance, but it can also impair peripheral vision. Blepharoplasty is a relatively minor surgical procedure and is commonly paired with other anti-aging techniques, including facelift and neck lift surgery, injectable fillers and facial resurfacing.

At Cole Aesthetic Center, we are proud to offer blepharoplasty procedures to our patients interested in rejuvenating their eyes and restoring their vision. Blepharoplasty is customizable to each patient’s unique needs and can address loose skin in both the upper and lower eyelids. Dr. Eric A. Cole will take the time to sit down with you during a one-on-one consultation to evaluate your concerns and develop a personalized treatment plan that works best for you.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Good candidates for blepharoplasty are male and female patients with droopy eyelid skin or under-eye fat deposits. Most blepharoplasty patients are older since sagging eyelid skin is a common effect of aging, but the procedure is safe for adult patients of any age. Blepharoplasty can target a number of aesthetic and functional concerns, including:

  • Droopy upper eyelids
  • Impaired vision caused by loose skin
  • Under-eye bags caused by fat deposits
  • Loose skin around the lower eyelids
  • Eyelid wrinkles

In addition to helping patients look younger, feel better and see more clearly, blepharoplasty can also create a more alert and friendly facial expression. Loose and sagging eyelid skin can often cause an unwanted change to an individual’s resting facial expression and may create a tired, aged appearance that blepharoplasty can help correct. Blepharoplasty is not intended to address sagging eyebrows, under eye discoloration or crow’s feet, although small improvements may be seen in those areas. Other procedures, such as brow lifts, chemical peels and injectable fillers, can target those specific concerns.

How Is Blepharoplasty Performed?

Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia, although it may also be performed under light sedation anesthesia depending on the patient. Once the patient has been sedated, Dr. Cole begins making incisions around the eyelids to provide access to the underlying muscle and fat tissues. In procedures that address both the upper and lower eyelids, the upper eyelids are treated first.

Incisions are hidden within the natural folds of the skin, and Dr. Cole takes great care to ensure visible scarring will not distract from his patients’ youthful results. After making the incisions, Dr. Cole begins reshaping the underlying tissue and removing or redistributing fat deposits as needed to eliminate under eye bags. After making any necessary adjustments, excess skin is trimmed away and the incisions are closed.

Blepharoplasty usually lasts around two hours but varies on a case-by-case basis. Blepharoplasty is completed as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to return home immediately following their surgery.

What Is the Downtime for Blepharoplasty?

Recovery following blepharoplasty is relatively quick with the procedure typically taking one hour. Most patients able to return to most normal activities within a few days. Patients should plan on taking about one week off from work and can typically resume full activities after two weeks once sutures are removed. Exercise and strenuous activities should be avoided for three weeks until the incisions have healed.

Common side effects following blepharoplasty include mild to moderate bruising, swelling, mild pain, watering eyes, dry eyes, sensitivity to light and blurred vision. Cold compresses and mild pain relievers may be used by the patient to provide relief and minimize discomfort. Patients will need to take great care not to rub their eyes while they heal from the procedure. Wearing contact lenses should be avoided for about two weeks. Dr. Cole recommends wearing sunglasses in the days following surgery to protect from wind and sun exposure while the eyes and eyelids are still sensitive.

Dr. Cole provides his patients with specific instructions on how to maximize their recovery and receive optimal results from their blepharoplasty procedure. Improvements are immediately noticeable, although final results are not evident until after a few months have passed and all traces of swelling have diminished. Scars will take 12 to 18 months to fully mature, although the incisions will be placed inconspicuously and will not be overly noticeable. Results are long-lasting and patients can enjoy their younger, rejuvenated appearance for years to come.
