Tumescent Liposuction

Surgical Body Contouring

Working to achieve your dream body can be a difficult but rewarding task. Unfortunately, sometimes eliminating stubborn pockets of fat in the abdomen, thighs, arms, back or neck can make the process more frustrating than gratifying. The genes for water retention and fat storage are built into our DNA, making some people genetically predisposed to store fat in hard to reach places.

If stubborn fat has kept you short of your goals and left you feeling helpless, then liposuction may be the answer. Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes fat directly from stubborn areas to promote a contoured and slim appearance. At Cole Aesthetic Center, Dr. Eric A. Cole and our staff are proud to offer liposuction for our patients looking to put the final touches on their dream bodies.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Good candidates for liposuction are patients in good health who are non-smokers, are within 20 pounds of their goal body weight, are prepared to maintain a healthy lifestyle for sustained results, and who have already undertaken a dedicated diet and exercise routine to achieve their goals but with limited or unsatisfactory results. Liposuction is a fat loss procedure, not a weight loss procedure. Patients should already be at a healthy body weight before undergoing liposuction surgery. Patients may experience a minor decrease in their body weight, but that is not the intended outcome of the procedure.

Patients who underwent a large amount of weight loss and have stubborn pockets of fat or women who have lingering fat from pregnancy tend to be great candidates for the procedure. Ideal liposuction patients will have firm and elastic skin, and Dr. Cole evaluates skin elasticity prior to deciding if they are good candidates for the procedure. Patients who already have loose skin typically do not make good candidates for liposuction as fat removal can exacerbate the issue.

Dr. Cole evaluates all of his patients during a comprehensive in-person evaluation to determine if they are good candidates for liposuction or would benefit more from other options like SculpSure laser contouring.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction is performed under local anesthesia. After the patient has been numbed, Dr. Cole will make small incisions in the targeted areas according to pre-marked measurements. He will then insert a cannula, a thin, hollow tube, through the incisions and into the subcutaneous fat. Tumescent fluid, a harmless saline solution, will be injected beforehand to make the fat easier to remove.

During the procedure, Dr. Cole may move the cannula in a back and forth motion to loosen up fat. The fat will be drawn out using suction and may be removed in multiple areas during a single procedure. Dr. Cole also uses a device called Micro Air to aid the process by oscillating and liquifying the fat. This advanced technique allows for a greater amount of fat to be removed and for more refined transitions between areas of removal.

Surgery will last between one and four hours, depending on how many regions are targeted and how much fat is removed. Common areas targeted during liposuction include the abdomen, arms, inner and outer thighs, buttocks, middle and lower back, neck and flanks. Dr. Cole will take great care to perform liposuction symmetrically by targeting pockets of fat from all angles, ensuring results match up with his patients’ expectations.

What Is the Downtime for Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure and does necessitate a brief period of downtime. The procedure is completed on an outpatient basis, meaning patients can return home the same day as the procedure. Most patients take between three and seven days off before returning to work and will need to wait between two to three weeks before resuming exercise and other strenuous activities.

Common side effects from the procedure include swelling, bruising, numbness and mild pain. Compression dressings will be placed on the treated areas to minimize bruising and swelling. Most side effects will last only a few weeks, although swelling can linger for several months. The incisions are kept small and discrete and will not result in overly visible scars. They will continue to mature for up to two years before fading into thin white lines.

Results will be immediately noticeable, although final results will take some time to develop fully as residual swelling diminishes. The skin in the surrounding areas will naturally adjust and tighten to the new contours to create smooth results. Final results will be visible in three to six months. The fat that is removed is gone for good and patients can expect to enjoy their new contours well into the future, although they should be prepared to maintain their body weight through regular diet and exercise. Liposuction directly removes excess fat, but it does not make patients immune from gaining more fat through an unhealthy and inactive lifestyle.
